"Hear, O Israel: the LORD our God, the LORD is one."

Deuteronomy is the last book of the Pentateuch. It reiterates the Mosaic law and ends with the death of Moses.

The book consists of three sermons or speeches delivered to the Israelites by Moses on the plains of Moab, shortly before they enter the Promised Land. The first sermon recapitulates the forty years of wilderness wanderings which have led to this moment, and ends with an exhortation to observe the law (or teachings), later referred to as the Law of Moses; the second reminds the Israelites of the need for exclusive allegiance to one God and observance of the laws (or teachings) he has given them, on which their possession of the land depends; and the third offers the comfort that even should Israel prove unfaithful and so lose the land, with repentance all can be restored.

Deuteronomy was probably written during the reign of Manasseh (c698-643 BC). Either suppressed of forgotten for a generation, the book was discovered in 621BC hidden in the temple. It has been expanded by later writers. The original parts (most of chapters 5-26 and 28) are thought to be the first book ever canonized as divine law.

Deuteronomy is presented here in stunning E-book format specially designed for the Kindle. His aim has been, if possible, to look at Latimer as his contemporaries saw him; and, setting aside modern fanciful portraits, to reproduce, as far as may be, the very authentic image of the man as he spoke, and acted, and suffered, three centuries ago. Modern authorities, there fore, friendly or unfriendly, have been very little consulted; the narrative has been compiled almost exclusively, in its framework, and in its details, from contemporary docu ments. Latimer spublished writings are rich in autobiographical allusions; a considerable number of his letters have been preserved among the Chapter House Papers in theS tate Paper Office ;in the same invaluable repository, and among the MSS. in theB ritish Museum, many documents have been found which throw much light upon his career; and the works of his contemporaries, especially of his great associates, Ridley and Cramner, contain frequent references to one who for many years played so important a part in the transactions of the time.

"Judaism' and 'Jewish religion' arc not synonymous terms. 'Judaism' is more comprehensive than 'Jewish religion,' for 'Jewish religion' is only a part of 'Judaism.' Judaism is the composite of the collected thoughts, sentiments and efforts of the Jewish people. In other words, Judaism is the sum total of all the manifestations of the distinctively Jewish national spirit.

"The Jewish religion is, then, only a part of Judaism, though by far its most important part. Among no other people on earth has religion occupied so large, so significant a place in their spiritual life as it has among the Jews. But besides religion there were, and still are, other elements in Judaism."

A man can pray better because of the prayers of the past; a man can live holier because of the prayers of the past, the man of many and acceptable prayers has done the truest and greatest service to the incoming generation. The prayers of God’s saints strengthen the unborn generation against the desolating waves of sin and evil. Woe to the generation of sons who find their censers empty of the rich incense of prayer; whose fathers have been too busy or too unbelieving to pray, and perils inexpressible and consequences untold are their unhappy heritage. Professor Merrideth Randall has an insatiable curiosity about the past. Fortunately, unlike other historians, she has the means to satisfy it—an amazing computer program that lets her rewind time.

Her interest turns to the 18th century river pirates of Cave-in-Rock who preyed on the thousands of settlers coming down the Ohio River on flatboats, heading for new lives on the western frontier. For a time, that stretch of the river was a black hole, where whole families disappeared along with their hopes and dreams. And treasures. And the only way for Merrideth to find out what happened to them is to use her software to get inside the head of Samuel Mason, the mastermind behind the attacks.

Pirates were not the only outlaws to ever infest Cave-in-Rock. Merrideth’s visit there coincides with Hellhound Homecoming, a wild annual gathering of lawless bikers and punk bands. A confrontation with five attendees has her wondering if her curiosity will be the death of her.

But God sends a guardian angel to her rescue in the form of Trevor Dalton, a tattooed biker who reminds her of two important truths: you should not judge a person by his exterior (or his mode of transportation) and you should not measure your sins against another person’s because you’ll both come up short. He has a lot in common with Brett Garrison, her McKendree College colleague who’s hoping for more than just a friendship with Merrideth. Yet the two men are as different as night and day.
